What's up, fellow myth monsters!
It's your boy @WikiMythGawd, and I'm back writing about one of my favourite Norse Myths, "Before the Beginning, and After."
Most of you may know about the all told story of Adam and Eve and the creation of the world. But have you heard of Ask and Embla?
The story begins with a description of the Norse world, and for those of you who are Marvel fans, some of these names may sound similar to Marvel's story of the long haired "Lord of Thunder," and the level of Asgard is mostly based on Norse Mythology.
We begin to learn about the two mainlands of Niflheim and Muspell. Niflheim was the cold and dark foggy land, whereas Muspell was the bright fiery lava land. For those of you who have seen Thor: Ragnarok, this will sound familiar as this is the origin of Surtr, the man with the flaming sword. He is known to have existed before the gods, and he is who shall perform Ragnarok (better known as the end of the world) by using his sword and burning the world with fire.
We then learn about Ginnungagap- the empty void of nothingness that happens to be stuck in the middle of the two. This is where the creature Ymir lived. He was formed by the melting of ice and became the ancestor of all giants. Ymir had given birth in his sleep to all of his children. Buri, the ancestor of Gods, married one of his sons and gave birth to Bor. Bor then had three
sons, one of which you may have heard of before being Odin as well as Vili and Ve.
As time went by, the three sons of Bor were disgusted with their world's emptiness and decided it was time to create their own. They did so by killing Ymir and using his bones, flesh, organs and blood to create the grounds, the skies, stars, and other parts of their world. To block off the giants from ever coming in, they created Midgard (to you Thor movie fans, this is Planet Earth!).
Eventually, the three brothers realized that they must populate their world. They found two logs by the shore, and to create their population, Odin breathed life into them, Vili gave them knowledge, and Ve gave them the shape of people. They named them Ask and Embla, and they became the father and mother of all of us!
They say that if you go far enough down your ancestry tree, you will always find a connection to Adam and Eve. Well, for the Norse people, this was the same for Ask and Embla.
And this, My fellow fans, was the story of the Creation of the Norse World!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Until next time ;)
