Story Time!

Hello, Myth-lings! The story I’ll be covering today is the myth of Prometheus and Pandora. Let’s get into it!

This myth presents the first woman in greek mythology. It all started with Prometheus and Zeus. They loved each other and became the best of friends! As their time in the perfect world continued, Prometheus later realized that Zeus seemed sorrowful and wanted to confront him on his feelings. Zeus admitted to feeling empty as if he had nothing left to do. Soon after, Prometheus had a fantastic idea to cheer up his friend. He decided to start a whole new race for Zeus’ entertainment!

This became their creation. Prometheus sculpted them to look just like a god; however, it was a version that could never be a threat to them and their power. There are many disputes about where this race was created, Asia Minor, Panopeus in Phocis… ( no one cares about that, let’s get back to the story! ) Once Prometheus finally sculpted the perfect clay, he started making little men. He used Zeus’ saliva to do so. Only men were a product of their new race. And, the approaches Zeus and Prometheus took in controlling these men were different. Prometheus was kind. He wanted to be their friend and help them survive by teaching them how to farm and forge tools. On the other hand, Zeus wanted them to praise the gods. He made Prometheus swear never to give them fire as then they could never challenge the gods. 

The humans gave the gods and goddesses a new opportunity to socialize. As Prometheus saw his creation thrive, he became more and more attached to them. The god wanted to give them more, so he decided to steal fire, an extraneous journey. He hid from the gods and goddesses as he climbed Mount Olympus to get a stalk, and he held it to the furnace. It lit on fire immediately, and he fled from the creature guarding the stove. As he climbed back down Mount Olympus, he showed the humans what he had gotten for them. 

Of course, the humans were excited, but Zeus felt too betrayed by his closest friend. As Zeus thought of revenge, he decided hate would have Hermes create the first female human, Pandora. He made her curious, beautiful, and deceptive. Zeus gave her “Pandora’s box” and told her never to open it. He transported her to land.

Prometheus knew Zeus would have a ploy for revenge, so he let his brother, Epimetheus know. However, when Hermes introduced him to the beautiful Pandora, he could not deny her. They were soon married. I hope you didn’t forget about the box! Pandora’s curiosity finally got the best of her, and she opened the box. What was inside, you might be wondering? She had opened the doors to Illness, Deceit, Violence, Misery, and Want. When she had finally shut it, she left hope in the box. 

The human race went through a terrible era of death, disease, and war. Zeus finally decided to unleash his full wrath on Prometheus. Was watching his people suffer not enough? Well, Zeus didn’t think so. He had him chained to rock forever as an eagle came to eat his liver every day, and every night his liver would grow back. The moral of the story next time, you shouldn’t break Zeus’, itty bitty heart!
